Chinese New Year is here! A festival full of fun and joy, with beautiful lanterns decorated around themed shops. It is the Year of the Dog this year, which is a glorious year as the animal symbolises luck! The celebration of the festival will start on the 16th February, where the Year of the dog will end on 4th February 2019. Here below are 5 delicious dishes to welcome the New Year of the Dog.

1. Sichuan-style sea bass with wok-fried vegetable

Indulge your taste buds with your friends or family, with this delicious fish dish, which takes up to 1 hour to make. Serving 4 people, with the recipe by James Martin, a vibrant Sichuan-style sea bass with wok-fried vegetables dish. Give yourself a challenge by eating the dish with chopsticks too!

The main ingredients are freshly chopped ginger, finely chopped chillies, spring onions, sea bass fillets, rice wine vinegar, chilli-bean paste and garlic cloves for the Sichuan-style sea bass. The wok-fried vegetables simply consists of spring onions, mangetout, bok choi, soy sauce and sesame oil.

2. Dim Sum Soy Sauce Chow Mein Noodles [Vegan]

The Vegan trend and consumers are growing in the UK market, so this dish is perfect for all you vegetarians and vegans out there. One need not need to miss out on an amazing Chinese dish for this festival, with a yummy vegan Dim Sum Soy Sauce Chow Mein Noodles. Here’s a fun fact, Dim Sum literally means ‘touch the heart’, so hopefully this dish will touch your heart, traditionally served on weekends. Serves portion sizes of 3 or 4, perfect for social occasions too.

The main ingredients for this dish is chow mein noodles, grapeseed oil, yellow onion, and few green onion. To create the sauce, this consists of sesame oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar and white pepper.

3. Asian-braised shin of beef with hot and sour shredded salad

This salad dish tastes as good as it looks. Perfect for all the meat lovers out there to welcome the New Year. The cooking time is over 2 hours for this dish, serving a generous amount of 6 people. The main ingredients in this dish are onions, root ginger, garlic cloves, coriander, Chinese cooking wine, soy sauce, brown sugar, beef stock, oyster sauce, rice wine vinegar, cinnamon sticks, star anise and beef shin. The salad is consisted of carrots, spring onions, red chilli, long green chilli and a bunch of fresh coriander for flavour. The salad is topped with salad dressing of lime juice, Thai fish sauce and caster sugar.

4. Fried or Steamed Veggie Dumplings (Vegan)

Another scrummy Chinese dish, perfect for Vegetarians or Vegans in fact! Quite a simple dish, full of vibrant flavours to snack on with family or friends. This dish can be prepared either steamed or fried.

The main ingredients for this dish is button mushrooms, cloves garlic, red pepper, orange pepper, spinach, baby bok choy, cilantro, fresh ginger, soy sauce and black pepper. To create the spicy soy dipping sauce, this can be made with soy sauce, hot chilli minced, rice vinegar and sesame oil.

5. Sweet and sour pork with pineapple

A delicious pork based dish, which is a favourite dish in America and China. Zest it up by adding pineapple for a sweet kick. One of the most simplest dish to prepare, serving around 4 people. The overall time for this dish should take about 40 minutes.

The main ingredients for this dish are pork tenderloin, fresh pineapple, yellow bell pepper, green bell pepper, white onion, garlic, white sesame. For the pork marinade, the ingredients are egg, cornflour, plain flour, cloves garlic, five-spice powder, rice wine, ground white pepper, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce. For the sweet and sour sauce, this consists of water, ketchup, rice vinegar, rock sugar, potato starch and salt.
